Career Background

Vega Ioane (full name Olaivavega Ioane) is a late-blooming offensive guard who did not play football until his sophomore year of high school at Graham-Kapowsin. He arrived at Penn State as a three-star recruit in the 2022 class and redshirted that year. He saw limited action in 2023 before becoming a full-time starter at left guard in 2024–2025. In 2025, he started every game, earned All-Big Ten First Team honors, and was a finalist for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award. He declared for the 2026 NFL Draft after his redshirt junior season and opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl.

Ioane has a spotless off-field record with no arrests or known issues.

He is widely regarded as a high-character leader with a strong work ethic and blue-collar mentality. Head coach James Franklin and interim coaches have praised his toughness, leadership, and team-first attitude. A viral moment after a tough loss to Ohio State showed Ioane helping equipment staff push a heavy cart up a ramp, which coaches highlighted as emblematic of his character. Of Polynesian (Samoan/Tongan-influenced) heritage, he has participated in Polynesian community events and team service initiatives.

Scouting Report Summary

Vega Ioane is a powerful, scheme-versatile guard with excellent pass-protection skills and a nasty demeanor in the run game. He plays with heavy hands, strong grip, and good leverage, rarely losing once engaged. He excels at mirroring in pass pro and driving defenders in gap/power schemes.

Strengths

• Elite pass protection — rarely allows pressure or sacks; quick hands and anchor.

• Powerful and physical at the point of attack; violent finisher with strong grip.

• Good athleticism and movement for a guard; climbs to the second level effectively.

• High football IQ, durability, and competitive toughness.

Weaknesses

• Average arm length for the interior can occasionally be an issue against long defenders.

• Can get overly aggressive and lose balance on some blocks.

• Still refining consistency in certain run-game angles and sustaining blocks through the whistle.

Final Evaluation

Ideal for gap/power or zone schemes that value physicality and reliable pass protection. Ioane projects as an immediate Day-1 starter at guard with scheme versatility and All-Pro upside due to his rare combination of power, technique, and consistency. As the clear top interior offensive line prospect in the 2026 class, he is a strong candidate to be the first guard selected, likely in the late first round.
